Urinary Incontinence
What is Urinary Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control or, in simple terms, the unintentional loss of urine. This can range from mild cases of urine loss during a cough or sneeze to more severe cases where the need to urinate is so sudden, you do not have time to make it to the bathroom.
There are several types of urinary incontinence:
- Stress incontinence: Leakage caused by stress or pressure on your bladder (i.e. coughing, sneezing, exercising)
- Urge incontinence: A sudden urge to urinate. This can be a frequent need to urinate or less frequent, but strong urges to urinate.
- Overflow incontinence: When your quantity of urine is greater than the capacity that your bladder can hold.
- Functional incontinence: An impairment that prevents you from making it to the bathroom in time. These can be physical or mental.
- Mixed incontinence: A combination of the above mentioned incontinence types. Typically it is a combination of stress and urge incontinence.
Who is Impacted By Urinary Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence can impact anyone: men and women, young and old. However, women are more likely to experience urinary incontinence than men. The most frequent time that women experience this is after pregnancy and menopause.
